Job Title: National Property Underwriting Practice Leader Reports To: Chief Underwriting Officer
Summary The property practice leader will assume a leadership role to enhance excellence in property underwriting both internally and externally. Additionally the practice leader will help formulate and implement strategic initiatives and business development activities that will profitably grow the portfolio in the domestic and reverse flow segments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
o Instructs and develop zone underwriting staff on property coverages to help build Property expertise. In addition, is a resource to all national underwriters by providing senior underwriting guidance on property matters.
o Recommends improvements in underwriting policies, standards and controls to ensure effective and sound underwriting decisions.
o Coordinates the Underwriting Referral process to ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines as well as meet customer service expectations.
o Responsible for production of Property business including developing and executing successful marketing strategies and developing strong partnership relationships with producers and supporting Production Underwriters.
o Coordinates Account Management on large complex property risks including loss control and claims.
o Performs file audits and make recommendations to ensure compliance and better efficiencies. o Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline risks using sound underwriting principles and portfolio analytics.
o Recommends types and limits of coverage to be provided.
o Determines if risks fit within established reinsurance program or if additional protection is necessary.
o Authorize exceptions to line sheet/ retention guidelines on an individual risk situation.
o Helps formulate retention guidelines in conjunction with corporate reinsurance strategy.
o Develops or modify policy wording when standard text is not appropriate
o Enhances and develop property products including forms and rating guidelines
o Monitors the amount of insurance in force on single risk or group of closely related risks, and evaluates possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance.
o Consults with zone underwriters, insurance agents, or brokers, and others to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain company underwriting policies.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university is preferred, High School or G.E.D. is required along with a minimum of 10 years related Property Underwriting experience. Must have 3 years recent experience in a leadership role. Must be highly knowledgeable in all commercial Lines and company underwriting standards and practices and have proven business development skills. Must have experience with excess property and global accounts. This is also a production UW role.

*Must have ability to travel approximately 30% of the month and on all forms of transportation.
