Associate Underwriter

This position is for those individuals seeking a career in underwriting or the individual who contributes in the direct production of revenue.  This individual understands customer’s businesses and industry.  This individual supports collaborative business relationships, elicits client understanding and insight to advise and make recommendations.  This individual will be responsible for renewal and new business production.  This individual exercises discretion and uses independent judgment by demonstrating the aptitude to underwrite insurance coverage.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reviews renewal business submissions for presentation to Company Underwriters.
  • Reviews renewal business submissions and prepares quoting within their authority.
  • Discusses quotes with producers.
  • Prepares quotations, binders and invoices.
  • Prepares coverage issuance forms for policy processing.
  • Prepares correspondence, letters, memos and faxes.
  • Issues requests for additional information.
  • Prepares additional information as warranted.
  • Maintains suspense system for documentation follow-up, renewal solicitation, etc.
  • Makes the supervisor aware of all problems, complaints, or deadlines.
  • Responsible for special projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor or department manager.
  • Creates and maintains electronic quote and policy files.
  • advice as provided by supervisor or department manager.
  • Follows work procedures and practices outlined by supervisor or department manager.
  • Maintains production source contacts and communicates with producers and markets.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university; or a minimum of five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

P&C licensed is required

Must demonstrate an aptitude to obtain thorough knowledge of insurance contracts and coverages being underwritten as well as marketing and sales skills.

HARDWARE and SOFTWARE SKILLS

Must have PC skills and intermediate knowledge of all Microsoft office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) Knowledge of AIM and/or ImageRight software is a plus.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret insurance policies, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations and any other related information.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and producers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts i.e. discounts, interest, commissions, cancellations, proportions, and percentages.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Through the Company’s education policy you are encouraged to take  IIA Insurance Series 21, 22 and 23 or classes to obtain an ACIC or CPCU OR ASLI designation or other related designations.
