The City of Champaign seeks qualified candidates for a career opportunity as a Risk Manager in the Human Resources Department. 

Responsibilities of Position

This position administers the risk management program to minimize the City’s risk of loss from exposure to property, liability, and personnel claims. Responsibilities include development, selection, and purchase of employee benefits programs; overseeing safety and loss control programs; financial administration of risk management programs including interpreting actuarial and statistical reports and analysis; budget administration including cost allocations; and claim management. The work involves working with vendors, employees, consultants, and residents in addition to writing technical reports and making presentations to various stakeholders.

The annual starting salary range is $88,170 - $100,378, DOQ, plus an excellent fringe benefits package.  Applications must be submitted online to champaignil.gov/jobs no later than Sunday, December 19, 2021.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Public or Business Administration, Occupational Safety, or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in risk management or insurance claim management.
  • Or an equivalent combination of work experience and education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. 
  • Knowledge of basic financial and statistical skills used in risk management.
  • Experience managing worker’s compensation claims.
  • Experience with employee-based insurance products, such as health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance; flexible spending plans, etc.
  • Experience negotiating contracts, particularly with vendors for employee benefits and/or broker services.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing information and preparing reports.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in insurance, risk management, and statistical decision-making processes.
  • Experience managing property and/or liability claims.
  • Related public sector experience.
  • Risk management certification.
  • Working knowledge of laws relevant to employee safety and benefits, such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations, the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act, Illinois Pension Code, Public Employee Disability Act, and Public Safety Employee Benefits Act.

Drug screening and criminal background check will be required.
