Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

Under general supervision of an Assistant Operations Manager, Residual Markets Division (RMD). Accountable for underwriting and providing total account management (i.e., independently managing assigned book of business) through: Effective consultation and negotiation with Travelers management, NCCI, customers (policyholders), producers/brokers and internal support groups; Oversee and provide instructions to centralized support staff for assigned book (i.e. policy issuance and updates, correspondence to customers, policy maintenance activities); and act as coach and mentor to less seasoned staff members (i.e., work planning and organization, determining best approach to meet business objectives, etc.). Support overall RMD profit, expense management, and strategic goals. At this level, the incumbent is expected to perform the majority of the functions of the job independently, but may seek guidance on the more complex or unique cases. This job typically does not lead others.

What Will You Do?

  • Independently manage an assigned book of business including specialty coverage and complex accounts.
  • Evaluate risk information, exposure, and accurate premium through sound review, investigation, and analysis of all relevant information (i.e., claim histories, loss control/premium audit information, D&B records, websites, etc.).
  • Analyzes and confirms coverage of claims that meet specific conditions, such as accidents that occur outside the covered states or outside the policy term. Upon determination that no coverage exists, present the findings to our Underwriting Leads. Upon agreement from the Underwriting Leads, direct the Claim Rep to deny the claim based on no coverage.
  • Make sound underwriting/pricing decisions related to what we can and cannot do to achieve profit and expense management objectives.
  • Conduct research as necessary to confirm that all relevant information is correct, credible and appropriate to the account.
  • Consistently demonstrates efficient and timely task management practices; maximizes task management tools.
  • The assigned book of business has no premium size limit (ranging from $1,000 to multi-million dollar accounts), includes risks from any industry including: Construction, Service, Transportation, Manufacturing, Temporary/Leased Labor Contractors, Agriculture, Retail/Wholesale, Mining and specialty coverages such as Admiralty, USL&H and Coal Mines.
  • The assigned book of business may also include two or more of the 27 states serviced by RMD.
  • Provides account support, including processing cancellations, reinstatements and endorsements for Assigned Risk Workers Compensation policies.
  • Provides oversight of all financial results, including billing and delinquency oversight, maintains and proactively manages all financial aspects of an assignment, including directing Billing Ops Dept staff when to deviate from procedural guidelines.
  • Provides direction to offshore vendor staff responsible for Rate/Quote/Issue tasks and instructs staff when to deviate from procedural guidelines based on AMU discretion. Processes transactions in situations that fall outside of the offshore vendor procedures that call for exception handling or on complex accounts.
  • Proactively contact policyholders and producer/broker to resolve discrepancies identified through the underwriting process.
  • Manages the resolution of cases that cannot be resolved through the dispute process. Direct Audit staff when underwriting exceptions are to be made to resolve premium issues. Manage accounts that go through an administrative appeal process and represent company to plan administrators and state regulating authorities.
  • Interpret and apply 'best practice' guidelines/rules, with the authority to make appropriate decisions outside of these guidelines as necessary.
  • Minimize potential financial losses by executing appropriate premium and underwriting decisions.
  • Authority to endorse policies based on own underwriting discretion up to an additional $25,000 in premium. Discretionary endorsements exceeding $25,000 in additional premium are discussed in Collaborative Underwriting Meetings.
  • Consistently demonstrates efficient and timely task management practices; maximizes our task management tools.
  • Through direct customer contact, maximize account satisfaction by effectively evaluating the business, identifying solutions to potential problems, and collaborating with all levels within and outside of the organization.
  • Manage problems thorough understanding and negotiation of related matters.
  • Independently resolve problems that have potential to negatively affect RMD goals.
  • Present conclusions directly to producer/broker and customer.
  • Analyze and verify if policy contract affords coverage for indemnity claims meeting specific conditions.
  • The conditions that trigger the verification process include injuries occurring in a state that is not covered on the policy or states covered but no premium reported; endorsements restricting coverage; requests for benefits of a state not listed on the policy.
  • Communicate directly with Plan Administrators and state regulatory authorities on various premium and coverage issues, dispute resolutions, policyholder investigations and mitigation of potential underwriting issues.
  • Work closely with Travelers legal representatives on both premium and coverage litigation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Prefer 5 years experience in the insurance industry and experience dealing with customers directly.
  • Prefer general experience/knowledge of Workers Compensation insurance, Assigned Risk products and services, and Business/Commercial Insurance functions (i.e., Claim, Risk Control, Premium Audit, etc.).
  • Intermediate business knowledge.
  • Solid math skills.
  • Basic underwriting knowledge and exposure analysis skills.
  • Basic knowledge of claim coverage determination, and Assigned Risk Market products and services.
  • Solid knowledge and ability to communicate and clearly express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Listens to and understands what others are saying. Appropriately shares information and maintains confidentiality.
  • Solid customer service experience, including proactively initiating direct contact with customers.
  • Solid ability to identify customer needs and takes appropriate action to meet those needs.
